Chicago Park District Summer Camp Registration: Complete Guide

By Maya Torres  ·  Last updated April 17, 2026  ·  5 min read
Summer 2026 registration is days away. Registration opens April 20 (west of California Ave) and April 21 (east of California Ave) at 9 AM. Nearly 20,000 children compete for spots. Spots fill within minutes.

Every April, Chicago parents set alarms, clear their schedules, and plant themselves in front of a screen at 8:55 AM for one of the most stressful 10 minutes in parenting. Chicago Park District summer camp registration is fast, competitive, and unforgiving. This guide covers everything: the dates, how the system works, what's changed in 2026, and how to be ready before the window opens.

2026 Registration Dates

The park district splits registration across two days based on where your park falls relative to California Avenue.

Date Which Parks Time
April 20 Parks west of California Ave 9:00 AM CT
April 21 Parks east of California Ave 9:00 AM CT

Camp runs June 22 through July 31, 2026 (six weeks), Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 3 PM or 10 AM to 4 PM depending on the park. Age range: 6 to 12. Nearly 190 camp sites citywide.

How Registration Works: Step by Step

1

Create your park district account now, before registration day

Go to anc.apm.activecommunities.com/chicagoparkdistrict and create an account. Do this today. Setting up an account while trying to register costs you time you don't have.

2

Build your wish list before April 20

New in 2026: the park district added a wish list builder. You can save programs you want ahead of registration day. This does not hold a spot. It just pre-loads your choices so you're not searching when the clock is running.

3

Be at your device at 8:55 AM

Log into your account before 9 AM. Have your wish list ready. The park district added a queue system this year: you'll enter a queue at 9 AM and register in order. Be in the queue from the start.

4

Register your first choice immediately

Go for your first choice first. If it fills while you're in line, the new map feature shows alternative parks with open spots nearby. Have 2-3 backup picks in mind before you start.

"There was a lot of demand, so you had to pick your favorites in the online system beforehand, and be planted in front of your screen for that 9 a.m. registration. And if you weren't quick enough, or your WiFi went out, then no spot for you." -- Allison Manley, North Center parent. Source: Block Club Chicago, April 2026

What's New in 2026

The park district made several changes after parent feedback about the registration process. Here's what's different this year:

Wish list builder. Save programs ahead of registration day. Not a reservation, just pre-loads your choices so registration is faster.

"High Demand" icons. Programs likely to sell out before registration opens are flagged so you can plan your backup choices in advance.

Map with alternatives. If your first choice fills, a new map shows nearby parks with available spots so you're not starting from scratch.

Queue system. Registration now uses a queue on opening day, replacing the first-come-first-served free-for-all.

Screenshot guides. Step-by-step visual instructions now live on the park district's registration landing page.

Public webinars. The park district is hosting two informational webinars ahead of registration at noon and 6 PM.

What to Do If Your Camp Fills Up

With nearly 20,000 kids competing for spots, some programs fill before everyone gets through. If your first choice is gone:

How Much Does It Cost?

According to NBC Chicago, the average cost is $8.34 per day, one of the most affordable summer camp options in the city. Many parks also participate in the Summer Food Service Program, providing a free meal and snack daily.

Financial assistance is available for Chicago residents. When registering, look for the financial assistance option in the checkout process.

How to Know If Your Park Is East or West of California Ave

California Avenue runs north-south at 2800 West. If your park's address has a street number lower than 2800 West, it's east of California: register April 21. If it's higher than 2800 West, it's west: register April 20.

Common east-of-California neighborhoods: Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square (east side), Ravenswood, North Center, Hyde Park, Bridgeport.
Common west-of-California neighborhoods: Humboldt Park, Austin, Garfield Park, Hermosa, Belmont Cragin, Portage Park.
